2006 Commercial Energy Efficiency

For commerical buildings the tables below summarize the prescriptive paths in chart form and some additional requirements to be noted in the following bullets:

  • For commercial buildings and residential buildings over three stories in height the building must comply with the energy efficiency requirements set forth in Chapter 5 of the 2006 IECC or ASHRAE/IESNA 90.1.
  • Section 502.3.1 allows buildings up to 40% of the window area to gross above grade wall area. Buildings that excceed this level are to use ASHRAE 90.1-2004 or section 506.

  • Thermal blocks are a minimum R-5 of rigid insulation, which extends 1-inch beyond the width of the purlin on each side, perpendicular to the purlin.
  • Assembly descriptions can be founf in Table 502.2.
  • R-5.7ci may be substituted with concrete block walls complying with ASTM c90, ungrouted or partially grouted at 32 in. or less on center vertically and 48 in. or less on center horizontally, with ungrouted cores filled with material having a maximum thermal conductivity of 0.44 Btu-in./h-f F.
  • When heated slabs are placed below grade, below grade walls must meet the exterior insulation requirements.
  • Insulation is not required for mass walls in Climate Zone 3A located below the "Warm-Humid" line, and in Zone 3B.
